Drum and Reiki - Two Practices, One Intention

At first glance, a frame drum and a Reiki practice might seem like separate things. One is ancient and percussive, physical and rhythmic. The other is quiet and internal, working with energy and attention in ways that are often subtle and hard to describe.

But underneath both is the same intention - to support the body, mind and spirit in finding their natural state of balance. And when the two come together, something interesting happens.

What Drumming Does

Drumming for healing is one of the oldest practices known to humanity. Across cultures and throughout recorded history, the drum has been used in ritual, ceremony and healing. Modern research is beginning to understand why.

Biofeedback studies have shown that drumming can influence brain activity, shifting it toward the meditative alpha state associated with relaxation and reduced stress. Research has also linked group drumming with improved immune function. What science is slowly articulating, shamanic practitioners have understood for a very long time - that the sound and vibration of a drum moves through the body in ways that support wellbeing.

What Reiki Adds

Shamanic drumming is powerful. It is also, in the words of those who practice it, intense. The practitioner works in direct contact with the energies of those they are working on, without the same protective container that Reiki naturally provides.

Reiki Drumming emerged when a Reiki Practitioner who was also a drummer realised he could bring these two practices together - using the drum as a channel for Reiki energy, combining the reach and resonance of sound with the gentle, protective quality of Reiki. The result is something that works on multiple levels simultaneously.

How They Work Together

In a Reiki Drumming session, the drum is not merely played over a client. It is charged with Reiki energy and used as an extension of the practitioner’s hands - scanning, sensing, directing sound and energy to the areas where it is most needed, and integrating with hands-on Reiki to complete the session.

The drum reaches into the body in ways that hands alone cannot. The Reiki ensures that what reaches in is gentle, intentional and for the highest good of the person receiving.
