Your drum will be made especially for you, with a choice of natural or cochineal-dyed hide, and traditionally finished or inside-out, with the flesh side of the hide becoming the face.
From there, there is an element of trust.
Natural hide carries its own markings, texture and character. Cochineal takes differently from hide to hide. And each finished drum will have a voice of its own.
No two will ever be quite the same.
The 14” paulownia frame is made by a trusted artisan whose craft I deeply respect. The lacing is cut from the same kangaroo hide as the face - one continuous strand, beginning and ending in the same animal.
Kangaroo hide is known for its bright, articulate response - light under the hand, warm in tone, and deeply alive to play.
She comes with a needle felted, hand whittled beater made from a windfallen branch.
