Natural Calf Hide Drum
Handmade in Coomba Park on the NSW Mid North Coast, using calf hide - dehaired on the face to reveal a pale, smooth playing surface, with the lacing cut from the same hide with the hair still on. Black and white, the natural markings of the animal woven into the back. One continuous strand, beginning and ending in the same animal.
The 14” paulownia frame is made by a trusted artisan whose craft I deeply respect.
Calf hide has an earthy, grounded quality - warm in tone, with a depth that feels closer to the animal than many other hides. The contrast between the smooth dehaired face and the hair-on lacing makes her unlike anything else from this studio.
She comes with a needle felted, hand whittled beater made from a windfallen branch.
Price includes postage within Australia.
