This drum has not yet been made - but she is already known.
She will be handcrafted by me using a full hair-on calf hide, stretched over an 18” paulownia wood frame made by a trusted artisan whose craft I deeply respect. Brown and white, with a natural spine line through the centre.
A hair-on drum plays differently to a standard hide drum. The tone is earthier, less responsive - more rumble than ring. She will suit someone drawn to something grounded and a little wild.
The lacing will be cut from the same calf hide as the face - hair-on, black and white, woven into the back of the drum. One continuous strand, beginning and ending in the same animal.
There is one hide and one frame. One drum will be made.
She comes with a needle felted, hand whittled beater made from a windfallen branch.
